All Hikes

Cameras, sweaters or sweatshirts, waterproof windbreaker, good hiking boots, lunch, water, compass, bathing suit, (unless you don't mind being caught in the buff), general knowledge of the woods, first-aid kit, and everybodys best friend, toilet paper, and preferably a cell phone are all a must on these hikes. Let us know where you will be going and at what time to expect you back. You may encounter moose, bear, deer, falcons, eagles, other hikers and various small animal life. Do not drink any ground or surface waters other than what you bring with you. Any litter must be carried back out. Also if you like to fish an nice 3 or 4 weight fly rod with flys of the season are a must. Be sure to get a license though, the wardens, some of which are my friends, usually win.


Mount Pisgah

Depending on your ability this is a nice 1/2 to 3/4 day hike and is 1.7 miles long . You may not want to walk the road back at the bottom of the hike, although there is a beautiful waterfall you may want to sit in, so just come back down the mountain the way you went up. Pisgah rises 2751 feet in the town of Westmore. The South Trail starts on the east side of Vt. Rt 5A opposite the state parking area. The north trail starts on the east side of Rt. 5A about 3 miles south of the junction of Rt 16. This leg of the hike is 2.2 miles. Summertime, pack your lunch to have on top and a suit for a swim at the bottom. A camera is a must as is a sweater or windbreaker. 20 minutes from the Village Inn.


Mount Hor

About 1/2 to 3/4 of a day hike. Mount Hor is on the west side of Lake Willoughby and you view Mt Pisgah across the lake. It rises 2648 feet in the town of Westmore. The summit is accessed by the blue blazed Hawkes Trail. The trailhead is 1.8 miles from Vt. 5A on the CCC road, beginning across from the Mt. Pisgah South Trail parking lot. 20 minutes from the Village Inn.


Wheeler Mountain

Rising 2371 feet in Sutton Vt. Trailhead is located on the west side of Wheeler Mountain road approximately 1/2 mile north of Wheeler Pond . Parking area to eagle cliff is 1.3 mi. 20 minutes form the Village Inn


Stannard Mountain

Rising 2400 feet in the Steam Mill Brook Wild Life Management Area in Stannard. THE STANNARD MOUNTAIN LOOKOUT TRAIL begins on the south side of Stannard Mountain road near the height of the land by the Stannard / Wheelock town line. A snowmobile trail skirts the eastern side of Stannard pond before climbing more steeply to the summit lookout. 25 minutes from the Village Inn.


Bald Hill

Rising 3315 feet in the town of Westmore this is a great hike. LONG POND TRAIL starts as a yellow blazed trail 350 feet east of long pond boat access on long pond road. MAD BROOK TRAIL from East Charlston, park at the gated road of theMad Brook Farm road and proceed southerly up the woods road to signed trail head. 2 miles and 20 minutes from the Village Inn


Burke Mountain

Rising 3267 feet just up the road from the Inn. From the south end of the lower parking lot at the Burke Mountain Base Lodge follow the gated red trail to he summit, 3 miles and a hop, skip and a jump from the Village Inn.


East Mountain

Rising 3420 feet in the town of East Haven. East Mountain is accessed by following the radar road to the gate where you park. At this point hike the old military road to the summit heading east. 3.5 miles and a nice hike for flatlanders but boring. A more adventurous hike is to park at the gate on the Madison Brook Road just off the Paul Stream Road. Hike to the headwaters of the Madison Brook and then bushwak to the summit. Ask for details from George. This is a spectacular hike and you will see lots of wildlife. You can make this hike from a 1 day to 2 or 3 days and cover the Senacas as well. Anywhere from 20 to 40 minutes from the Village Inn depending how you want to tackle it.


Moose Mountain

Rising 2339 feet in the Willoughby State Forest in Sutton Vt. Trailhead begins at a parking area on the east side of Wheeler Mountain Road 1/4 mile north of Wheeler Pond. Approximately 1 mile. Moose Mountain may also be accessed from the Mount Hor Trail which is 5 mi. 20 Minutes from the Village Inn.
